The Honorable Commissioner and stakeholders in the meeting pledged to review the programme strategies to improve its implementation through innovative resource mobilization. YOBE STATE CELEBRATES WORLD MALARIA DAY

The Executive Secretary Yobe State Primary Healthcare Board Dr. Babagana Kundi Machina held a press conference on the celebration of the 2022 WORLD MALARIA DAY. Every 25th of April, Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Malaria Day. A platform to sensitize the people on the burden

of malaria and mobilize resources to end the malaria scourge in the country.

The text of the Executive Secretary press briefing.

It is with a great sense of duty and responsibility that i welcome you to the commemoration of 2022 World Malaria Day, following the first Africa Summit on Malaria in the year 2000 when the Abuja Declaration was made the Roll Back Initiative was instituted. This year’s theme is Advance Equity, Build Resilience End Malaria and the slogan is Every Effort Counts.

At the African Summit, 44 countries committed themselves to intensive effort to combat the scourge of malaria. I am delighted to address you on this very important occasion to the achievements and progress made in the fight against Malaria, especially in the last one year in Yobe State.

As you all know Malaria is the most common preventable public health problem in Nigeria yet about 97% of Nigerians especially Children under the age of five and pregnant woman are at risk of malaria infections and its complications.

It is the commonest cause of absenteeism from school, office, farms, market, etc. resulting to lower productivity.in addition to the direct health impact; it exerts a huge social and economic burden on our communities and country. Billions of Naira is lost to malaria annually in form of treatment cost, prevention and loss of man hours.

A variety of scientifically proven preventive measures to control malaria especially in developing countries have been conducted Yobe Yobe State viz: mass distribution of  Insecticidal Treated Nets (ITNs), seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention targeting children under 5 years and intermittent Preventive Therapy (IPT) for pregnant mothers.Yobe State has made huge progress in the fight against malaria since 2013 resulting in a significant reduction in malaria burden. The 2013 NDHS shows that malaria is now responsible for 2 out of 10 deaths in children less than 5 years, as against 30% in previous years.

Furthermore, the NMIS 2015 shows a remarkable fall in malaria prevalence from 42% to 27%, which is commendable stride in government’s efforts to stem malaria.

In 2019, Yobe State Government and partners distributed Two Million Two Hundred Thousands (2.2M) long lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) through mass campaigns across the 17 LGAs of the State. Similarly, this year the Yobe State Government, NMEP and Malaria partners have concluded plans for Mass ITNs replacement campaign scheduled from July – August 2022 in all the 17 LGAs.

The State along with NMEP and partners has also planned to conduct third round of seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) across 17 LGAs.

All these preventive measures are to protect our people from the scourge of malaria in communities and also to reduce morbidity and mortality among children under five years and pregnant mothers.

I wish to call on all of us to double our efforts and encourage the private sector to commit more resources to support the fight against malaria.

The huge resources required to combat malaria in the country can only be effectively mobilized with the contributions of both the Government, RBM partners, Philanthropy and the Private Sector.

Finally, I also wish to comment the rewarding partnership and support we enjoy with the press all of these years. We however call for more concerted efforts to get this life saving message out to our people. This tempo needs to be sustained.

I implore us to strive towards effective leadership and partnership this is what will give the needed leverage to free Nigeria and indeed Africa of Malaria.

I call on you all to participate actively in the 2022 World Malaria Day celebrations as we continue in our efforts towards achieving a Malaria free Nigeria.

Thank you and God bless
