Yobe State Explores Strategic Partnership with BADEA to Boost Post-Insurgency Recovery

In a bid to enhance recovery efforts and foster economic development, Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, recently held a significant meeting with Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, President of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA). The meeting, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, focused on areas of collaboration to support Yobe State’s post-insurgency reconstruction and development agenda.

Addressing the Aftermath of Insurgency

Governor Buni highlighted the extensive damage caused by the Boko Haram insurgency, describing Yobe as the second most affected state in Nigeria. He detailed the destruction of vital infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, roads, power facilities, and water systems, which devastated the state’s economy and disrupted the livelihoods of millions.

“Alhamdulillah, peace has substantially returned to our state,” Governor Buni stated. “We have relocated displaced persons back to their communities, rebuilt infrastructure, and implemented programs aimed at economic recovery. These efforts have been recognized as a model by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). However, the magnitude of destruction requires additional support.”

Leveraging Agriculture for Economic Recovery

Governor Buni emphasized Yobe State’s agricultural potential, with 1.6 million hectares of arable land and a population of four million, primarily engaged in farming. He highlighted the state’s leading role in the production of sesame seeds, gum Arabic, and livestock, as well as its significant potential in untapped mineral resources.

The governor pointed to the state’s Multi-Billion Naira Agricultural Empowerment Programme, which has provided modern farming tools to over 5,000 farmers. “Despite our efforts, only a fraction of our land is being fully utilized for agriculture. Support from BADEA would help us unlock this potential, ensuring food security and economic growth,” he said.

Investment Opportunities in Yobe

Governor Buni assured the BADEA delegation that Yobe State is now peaceful, business-friendly, and open to investments. The state’s international cargo airport offers a strategic advantage for transporting agricultural products and livestock to both domestic and international markets.

“Our priorities include improving agriculture, education, healthcare, road infrastructure, and access to safe drinking water, while addressing other pressing challenges. Collaboration with BADEA could significantly accelerate these efforts,” he added.

BADEA’s Commitment to Support

In response, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah commended Governor Buni’s dedication to rebuilding the state and improving the lives of its people. He expressed BADEA’s readiness to explore areas of partnership to support Yobe State’s reconstruction and recovery programs.

“Mr. Governor, your commitment to channeling resources effectively for the benefit of your people is exemplary. We are ready to support your laudable efforts to achieve sustainable development,” Dr. Tah said.

A Shared Vision for Progress

The meeting underscores Yobe State’s commitment to strategic partnerships as a cornerstone for rebuilding and economic revitalization. With BADEA’s support, Yobe is poised to accelerate its recovery journey, paving the way for a brighter future for its citizens.

This collaboration marks another milestone in Governor Buni’s administration’s efforts to transform Yobe State into a hub of prosperity and resilience.
